In the penultimate week of school fifteen Year 7 students were recently given the exciting opportunity to visit the University of Oxford after excelling in their end-of-year geography exam. This trip was made possible through a unique link with the university — a former student from our school who studied Geography at St John’s College, Oxford and is now completing her PHD at the University.
The day began with a warm welcome at St John’s College, where students attended a fascinating talk about life at Oxford University.They learned what it’s like to study at one of the world’s most prestigious institutions and asked questions about university life, study habits, and living away from home.
After the talk, students were treated to lunch in the college hall,which was very extravagant and gave students a real taste of student life in Oxford. After lunch the group visited the Oxford Ashmoleon Museum. Here, students took part in a hands-on workshop. This unforgettable session gave them the chance to hold and examine a range of fascinating historic objects, including an iron age axe and ancient Greek money. The students then had some free time to explore the museum's exhibits including mummies and samurai swords.
To finish the group enjoyed a guided tour of St John’s College, exploring the historic buildings, peaceful courtyards, and beautiful grounds that make the university so special.
The trip was both educational and inspiring, giving students a glimpse into the opportunities that education can offer.
