Year 10 pupils from Lift New Forest Secondary School recentlyenjoyed an inspiring and educational visit to the University ofBath, giving them a valuable insight into both elite sport and university life.
During the trip, pupils had the exciting opportunity to complete arange of fitness tests using state-of-the-art equipment.Highlights included 30m sprint testing using professional speedgates, vertical jump testing, and the Illinois agility test. Theseactivities allowed pupils to experience how components offitness are measured in a university and elite sport setting,bringing classroom learning to life.
The group also enjoyed a guided tour of the University of Bath’simpressive sports facilities, learning about the wide range of eliteathletes who have studied and trained there. This gave pupils aclear picture of how academic study and high-level sport cansuccessfully go hand in hand.
One of the standout moments of the day was a question-and-answer session with Olympian Charlie Brown, a ModernPentathlete. Charlie spoke openly about balancing studying withbeing an elite athlete, the importance of diet and nutrition, thesacrifices required to compete at the highest level, managinginjuries, and maintaining a healthy work–life balance. He alsoshared his experiences of the Paris Olympics, which provedincredibly motivating for pupils.
In addition, pupils attended a diet and nutrition talk delivered bya university lecturer, further supporting their understanding of key course content.
Overall, the trip strongly linked to the Components of Fitness andDiet & Nutrition elements of the curriculum, while also inspiring pupils and giving them a valuable insight into university life andfuture opportunities.
