Our brilliant Year 7 students recently traded the classroom for the cosmos with an action-packed educational visit to the Winchester Science Centre and Planetarium. The day was fueled by curiosity,hands-on learning, and a fair amount of rocket science.
In the morning, students took on the roles of aerospace engineers in our exclusive 'Blast Off' workshop. The challenge was designing and launching high-velocity bottle rockets. To maximize their rocket's flight, students had to think critically about the core principles of physics: finding the perfect way of creating fuel fumes, crafting streamlined nose cones to reduce air resistance, optimizing the launch pad release to minimize friction, and tracking the total distance traveled. Every test flight was a chance to measure, tweak,and improve their designs.
After brushing the rocket fuel off their hands, students headed into the stunning 360-degree Planetarium cinema. We leaned back and took a breath-taking journey across the solar system, exploring the stars, constellations, and the vast scale of our universe in an unforgettable visual experience that brought our space science curriculum to life. The rest of the day was spent exploring two floors of mind-blowing interactive exhibits. From testing the speed of sound and mastering the aerodynamics of flight to exploring how our own bodies function, Year 7 dived into science with incredible enthusiasm and energy.
The mission didn’t end when the coach pulled back into school. Back in the classroom, students have been channeling their inspiration into creativity. Using everything they learned about what makes an exhibit engaging, they have been working hard on their design worksheets to invent their very own interactive science exhibits. Ultimately, it was a fantastic day out that perfectly balanced big science concepts with a massive amount of fun, leaving our Year 7s inspired, energized, and looking forward to their next hands-on adventure.
