GCSE Geography Fieldwork Brings River Studies to Life
May 25, 2026

Our Year 10 geographers recently completed their Physical Fieldwork requirements as part of their GCSE Geography course.Students undertook a geographical investigation to answer the question: “How do the characteristics of the River Dark water change from source to mouth?”

During the trip, students visited four sites along the river and collected a range of fieldwork data, including measurements of width, wetted perimeter, depth, cross-section, velocity, and sediment size.

On returning to school, students spent time analysing their findings during lessons before drawing conclusions from the data collected. Their investigation showed that, as expected, the river became faster, deeper, and wider further downstream.

The fieldwork provided students with valuable hands-on experience in geographical enquiry and data analysis, helping to bring classroom learning to life while preparing them for their GCSE examinations.
