Fieldwork Brings Geography to Life
July 31, 2026

The Year 7 Geography students visited Milford on Sea to enhance their learning as of their Coasts topic in Geography. This trip allowed them to apply their geographical knowledge to the real world and experience some geographical fieldwork techniques.

In the morning the students looked at the geology of the coastline and discovered why the area was at risk of erosion by carrying out wave counts and field sketches. We walked along the coastline and saw the hard engineering strategies put in place to try and stop the erosion including a sea wall that incorporated very expensive beach huts and groynes to prevent long shore drift.

We had a picnic lunch then headed along the spit in the afternoon where we saw the rock armour used to preserve the spit and the salt marsh area behind it. It was great to hear the students asking great geographical questions all day and we are grateful to the New Forest Education team for supporting us to run the trip.
