Year 10 Gain Lifesaving Skills on Restart a Heart Day
October 16, 2025

On 16th October, all of our Year 10 students took part in a hands-on workshop to mark Restart a Heart Day — the global initiative raising awareness of cardiac arrest and teaching essential resuscitation skills. This initiative is led by the Resuscitation Council UK, the British Heart Foundation, St John Ambulance, the British Red Cross, and the UK ambulance services. Across the South, 10,000 children were taught how to give life-saving CPR.

We were fortunate to welcome Jacqui and Graham, Community First Responders with the South Central Ambulance Service, who guided students through practical sessions on performing effective chest compressions, recognising when someone is in cardiac arrest, and confidently using a defibrillator. Their expert and reassuring approach gave our students not only the knowledge but also the confidence to act should the need ever arise. In addition to providing students with skills for life, the workshop offered valuable encounters with professionals and a hands-on insight into their work.

Students shared how valuable they found the experience:

“I feel really confident now and know what I have to do.”

“We have two defibrillators in school and I’ve seen them near the shops. I didn’t know how to use them before, but now I do. It’s easy — and it can save a life.”

Our Year 10s can now:

  • recognise the signs of a cardiac arrest and the importance of acting fast;
  • deliver chest compressions at the correct rate and depth;
  • access and use a defibrillator safely and effectively;
  • understand that those yellow devices in our school (and near local shops) are not just decorative — they are lifesaving;
  • feel empowered and confident to help if someone collapses.
