It has been a busy and rewarding time in Food Technology, with both Year 9 and Year 10 students showcasing their growing skills, creativity, and confidence in the kitchen.
Year 9 students have recently completed their final rotation, taking on the exciting challenge of creating their own dishes based on the brief ‘suitable for a school canteen’. With the support of their planning and preparation, students worked independently to design and produce their chosen meals. The results were fantastic, with a wide range of creative and practical dishes on display. It was clear to see the excellent progress students have made over the term, both in their cooking skills and their ability to work with increasing independence.
Year 10 students have been focusing on developing high-level practical skills in preparation for next year’s GCSE assessments. One of their key challenges involved working with a whole chicken, where they carefully and skilfully portioned it to maximise yield and minimise waste. Using their prepared cuts, students created flavourful peri peri or jerk chicken dishes using the legs, thighs, and wings, while the breast meat was transformed into homemade chicken nuggets or goujons. The standard of work was extremely impressive, with students fully embracing the challenge and demonstrating real culinary talent.
In a second practical, students made homemade calzone pizzas from scratch, preparing their own dough and mastering the technique of folding and sealing to create a perfect crust. This task required precision and care, and students rose to the occasion, producing some excellent, high-quality results.
We are incredibly proud of the effort, enthusiasm, and progress shown by all students. Their willingness to challenge themselves and develop new skills has been wonderful to see.
